Austin police say the suspect in a series of bombings is dead after he was surrounded by police Wednesday morning.

Investigators tracked the suspect to a hotel in Round Rock, Texas which is a few miles north of Austin. They say the unidentified 24-year-old white male drove off on I-35 and they followed. Investigators say the suspect pulled his car over into a ditch and shots were exchanged. Police say when officers approached the suspect’s car, he detonated an explosive device inside the car, killing himself.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said the explosion knocked one of his SWAT officers back. The officer suffered minor injuries.

In the past three weeks, four package bombings happened in the Austin area, killing two people.

Chief Manley talked about the events. The shooting is under investigation. Manley warned that other explosive devices may be out there.
