China has taken great strides to limit the spread of the coronavirus, which originated from the country, but that hasn’t stopped the impact the virus has made on its citizens. In just 10 days, China has built a hospital to treat those affected, and it has damaged the already failing financial markets.
Demands for beds for those who test positive for the virus are the main reason for the construction of the hospital. “The lack of hospital rooms forced sick people to return home, which is extremely dangerous,” Chinese epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan told CCTV. “So having additional (beds) available is a great improvement.”
There is no sign of when the virus will subside, and there has officially been one death outside of China caused by the virus in the Philippines. With no end in sure, some Chinese regions have extended the Lunar New Year holiday break in work and schools. Hubei, a Chinese province, has suspended the new semester until further notice in efforts to contain the virus.
The U.S. has restricted it’s borders, limiting the amount of non-American Chinese people from entering the country. Hua Chunying, a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman, claimed that the U.S. is, against WHO advice, “overreacting” and “spreading fear”.
