Public Safety Advisory: Sextortion Scams

UTC Community:

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Police Department (UTCPD) is warning students about a growing sextortion scam targeting college students through dating apps and social media. Over the past year, UTCPD has investigated several cases involving this scheme, with incidents ranging in severity.

How the Scam Works

  1. Unknown individuals connect with students on dating apps or social media.
  2. They build a false sense of trust and engage in online relationships.
  3. Once explicit images or videos are exchanged, the suspect demands money or more images, threatening to release the content publicly if the victim refuses.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Never share explicit images or videos, even with someone you trust.
  • If someone pressures you or threatens you, do not engage. Report it immediately.
  • Use privacy settings on social media to limit who can contact you.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off, end communication immediately.
